First Encounters of the third kind…
Finally!! We made it!! After months of paperwork and preparation and nearly three years of waiting (no thanks to Covid) we finally landed in Chicago. Arriving with just a few suitcases and basic items, we were ready to embrace Chicago as our new home.
First Impressions
It is true what they say, everything is bigger in the States. Nothing prepares you for the vastness of America. Even knowing that Chicago is the third largest city in the United States, the size and sprawl of the city does not hit home until you are here. It also wasn’t until the sun set on our first full day in the city that we realised that it has an incredible skyline.
Close Encounters
The perception of big cities, not just in America, are that they are hard, unwelcoming places. People are often depicted as being unfriendly with no time for strangers. That is not what can be said for Chicago. Being English and therefore reserved, having random strangers talk to you catches you off guard. However, being open you will find that the people of Chicago are some of the most kind, polite and welcoming people you will meet.
Don’t Believe The Negativity
Chicago gets a raw deal and receives a lot of negative press, due to the violence presented in the media. Sadly there are some violent crime in Chicago, as there is in any large city. So you do need to be sensible and be aware of your surroundings when walking around and on public transport. But don’t let this put you off exploring this fantastic city.
As The Sun Goes Down
Nothing really prepares you for making a move abroad and although the UK and US share similarities, it is not quite the same. But this is why we did it. To experience another perspective and embrace a new culture. And you never really know how it is going to be or how you are going to feel until you get there. But for us we are very excited and happy aliens.
Chicago is a truly great city. As an Englishman with family and friends in the city I look forward to every visit. It has everything from sports, nights out, food. and a wonderfully diverse culture. Looking forward to hearing more about your amazing journey living on this side of the pond ! Keep the pictures coming.
Thanks for posting. Could not agree more, there is so much to explore and experience. Keep an eye out! There will be more updates as we embrace everything that Chicago has to offer!
